Drew Guy interview - October 13, 2011

Drew Guy has been kind enough to answer a series of questions from the snarescience forum community.

Quick Background:

Drew Guy, 22, of Southaven, MS, is a recent 8 year ageout from DCI. Drew marched Memphis Sound 2004 & 2005. He then marched Bluecoats 2006-2011. He is also involved with WGI in Music City Mystique, 2008-present. Drew has served as the battery arranger, battery coordinator, and visual designer for multiple high schools in both the indoor and outdoor arenas. He was also a co-founder and charter member of the Memphis Grizzlies NBA basketball team’s “Grizzline“, where he is currently the Halftime Performance Manager. Drew currently is an active clinician and the Executive Promoter and Publisher for Sajous Music.

And now, on to the questions!

drmmrboy88: After being in the drum corps activity for such a long time, how does it feel that you won't be able to go back for the next season?

Drew: Honestly, after 8 years of DCI, it doesn't feel too bad. I've been ready to move on to the staff side of things since about 2009. That was the first year I came home from tour and walked right into being a caption head at a high school. I enjoy teaching way more than I've ever enjoyed performing and knowing that makes me almost relieved that I'm finally done.

i_like_turtles: What was your favorite Bluecoats book to play/show to listen to?

Drew: This is a hard question because out of all 6 of the books I played there, two of them stuck out to me. 2008 and 2010. But I would have to say that 2010 is my favorite book to play. It was just so well written and fit with the rest of the ensemble. That season was the only season I had at Bluecoats where I actually felt like a musician behind a snare drum. Which is also one of the reasons why 2010 was my favorite show to listen to. It had all the musical qualities that a person should appreciate. And the whole show was just phat and funky. For a drummer, that's everything.

zball75: What is your favorite rudiment/hybrid rudiment to play?

Drew: This is another hard question, mainly because the options are endless. My favorite rudiment of all time to play is a roll. Kind of an anticlimactic answer, but we all know that there is nothing more satisfying than a clean roll. Most of the hybrid rudiments I know, but I'm not sure of their name so for this one I'll just pick an old favorite: the flam drag. Not a hybrid, but it's a fun one.

ATShootZ: How many times, if any, were you cut during auditions for any indoor or outdoor group?

Drew: I haven't been cut from any group I've auditioned for.

PogoPantheon: Were you the mastermind behind all the ridiculous visuals/vocals in the past few years at coats?

Drew: I wasn't the "main" mastermind. Everyone got a chance to throw an idea in but I always had the final say in what went in and what didn't. About half of the visuals in 2009 were mine but for the vocals, if you remember, we all just did what we wanted. In 2010 I think I only put one visual in and none of the vocals. And 2011, I don't think I put in anything we did.
