Need help with broad fives.

Posted: Fri Jul 10, 2015 1:24 pm

So, I'm not exactly a beginner, but I would like help with broad five tuplets. I was wondering if there is any good tips or simple tricks to play these five tuplets over two beats. In context I have to play a triplet into two five tuplets going into a beat of sixteenth notes. Thanks.

I gave a go. It only took me a few tries. Play a couple of triplets and then sit on them (drag) when you play the "broad fives." I found I would drag the last from 5 back to 1. It was better for me to count out each number "1-2-3-4-5" and lock in with my left foot. Then I did it off the right foot (count 2 to 4). I tried to use syllables "1 Mississippi-2 Mississippi..." but I tended to rush and went back to "1-2-3-4-5".
1. Mark time.
2. Metronome
3. 1 x 5's; then 2 x 5's.
4. Switch back and forth between: 4 x 1/8's; 2 x 5's.
5. 2 x triplets; 2 x 5's.
6. Make your own exercise. Build up to using all combos and then make a tag ending with 1/16's.
7. Move an accent around, say to 2 or 1-5-1 (flafla), so you are no longer dependent upon the foot and the down beat.
8. Move on to 7:2 and 9:2 poly. I really like the 9 over 2's.

I've always counted them as "University".

"U-ni-ver-si-ty"

"university" I like that, especially in a 12123 feel.

"Un - i - vers - it - y", "hipp - o - pot - a - mus', or my favorite, "trig - o - nom- e - try" are good for counting them. To actually play it, you just have to repeat it until you get into the groove and understand how to play 5 notes evenly in that space. Make sure you vary the tempo so it isn't just muscle memory at that tempo, but an actual understanding of 5lets.
