What is Alternate Sticking?!?

Posted: Mon Aug 10, 2009 11:24 pm

ok. so I've been teaching a high school's drumline about 30 minutes from my house here in Ar-Kansas. Well we were having trouble getting the kids to play a simple triplet. i mean...just a measure of triplets at 100 bpms. But come to find out, they were playing with wierd stickings, so naturally i told them to alternate, you know R L R L.

They all looked at me like i was an Idiot...and asked. "What is alternate sticking?" i was quite bedaffled. (its a word)(to me) but how do i explain this to them without sounding like a smartass...or should i just flat out say it. lol oh and what would ur initial reaction to that question be?

Um just tell them that it is right left right left. You wouldn't sound like a smartass at all, just say it in a nice way. Also my reaction would be is why are you in a drumline?

You can't just show them an example of playing alternate?

Quit.
There's no way around reality, and there's no way to fix things that have already happened. It is what it is, we are what we are, and there is nothing more to life than that. Rule #9.

we have one freshmen, two juniors and one senior on snare, a junior on tenor
three juniors and one senior on bass.

their old band director used to show them how to play something, not music, just showing them the rhythm. then they'd have to figure out how to play it by themselves.

so yeah. to actually have to read music and learn "stickings" is like making their brain explode. But i live in Hope, Arkansas going to Southern Arkansas University this fall. (to drummerchris83)

It's very unnatural to not do alternate sticking, unless told otherwise. Back in the day, which was a wednesday, it was hard to do the different sticking patterns. Looks like you have the opposite problem. Make them play 8's with alternating their sticking and get a good quality sound. That's what I would do. And if that didn't work, take the sticks away from them. JK.

are you sure they are not confused, and think that you are meaning there is an alternate sticking...like a "back-up" one. If you are actually saying "alternate" instead of "alternating, they might be getting confused. When I first read the post, that is what I thought you meant as well.

It sounds like they were never taught how to count triplets, and therefore don't know how to organize the stickings by count. Try teaching them that if they count them right - I use tri-pl-let - the right hand would be on the "tri" of 1 and 3, and the left is on the "tri" of 2 and 4. This will kill 2 birds with one stone. They are learning how to cound AND organize the sticking...you are setting them up for future success.

i completely agree with you man! One of my old instructors is the new band director at this particular high school, and he wanted me to teach them how to read the music/dynamics/stickings/etc. But the Band Program so far has made a complete 180 degree turn and is better than ever. i mean yeah. they're not perfect, but they're well on their way to getting good. But your right it IS NOT the students fault at all. just the old band director.

i agree. yeah. it is kinda dumb, to most people to teach basics like this to a high school line. But hell, I love teaching, this whole not knowing anything due to lack of instruction is just a small rock in the road to them becoming somewhat good percussionist/musicians.
