Finding a Solo

Posted: Fri Jul 03, 2009 8:23 pm

There is a 8th grader at my school that is fairly new to percussion, but is a very quick learner. I'm looking to find him a solo. I want to find a book that has a variety of solos in it so he has a lot to choose from. Maybe 13 or so solos in it? I'm not really looking at easy or beginner level, but maybe a step above? I don't know if he is ready for "medium" level solos, but maybe a easy-medium? Something to challenge him and nothing that will take him 2 weeks to get. I know it's hard to find a solo for someone if you don't know there skill level, but I don't know of any good books and I don't want to take a shot in the dark and just choose one.

Hopefully someone out there has some book in mind, filled with 5,9, double stroke rolls, paradiddles, flams, flam accents, Drag taps, and other beginner-to medium hard rudiments. Thanks!

im thinking a " haskel Harr solo book " it has some pretty advanced stuff as well, like downfall of paris, and bunker hill, and Hum Drum.

This book is good, it's more traditional-style rudimental solos and they're not difficult. If you're looking for something more modern the cookbook is good.

Its pdobably late now but why not try the "Downfall of Paris",it has all those rudiments plus some great hand to hand drags.plus its not really that hard to play.
