If you're at a show and want to be prepared for the worst, it's not a bad idea to keep spare heads in a cymbal bag (you'll even be able to keep a couple spare bass heads there, too.) Sure, kevlar doesn't break a lot, but it happens, and usually at the most inconvenient time, like in the parking lot, or in the stands just before halftime. Quad heads are constantly breaking... as are snare sticks and quad mallets... can't keep enough of those on hand. This is just for shows/game situations.... for rehearsals I usually don't cart around spare equipment.

I hadn't thought of bringing my laptop with Sibelius for rehearsals. I generally just jot notes down on some comp paper and fix it in sibelius later.

I pretty much just bring

Bag w/
ratchet key
2 pairs snare sticks
binder w/ show music, exercises, warm ups
composition paper pad
pencil/pen
ear plugs
stick tape
korg met
water bottle
protein bar and apple

I would add to ChrisS list:
- Flat and Philips head screwdrivers
- Allen Wrench set
- needle-nose pliers
- Rachet/Wrenches

I end up using these tools at every single rehearsal and performance to repair a drum or harness, they've saved me a ton of headaches.

It's so much more convenient to fix stuff on the spot, especially if you have a terrible memory like myself. I also use Pages to make a calendar of what we need to hit at certain rehearsals as well as to keep myself on time.

My bag:

-Macbook
-Dr. Beat
-Cable for hooking up Dr. Beat to Long Ranger
-2 pairs of snare sticks
-1 pair of bass mallets
-Stick Tape
-Water Bottle
-Binder full of scores and music (though nowadays I often just use my laptop when I need to look at the music)
-Hi-Tension Drum-key
-Normal Drum key
-Surgical Tubing (to replace the rubber tube on cymbal stands when they wear out)

I just keep a toolbox nearby so I don't have to lug that junk around.

Ideas, ONE solid technique, musicianship, Your students respect, and some stories to tell to relate to your teaching method. For instance my drum tech told us how he played his DCI Finals show with a broken middle finger on his right hand, Then he won drums. 8)

Tangible Items include

Sticks,
Book,
Sandals to throw, and im not joking
maybe a prize to whoever improved the most?
That always made me want to practice

most important intangible, dont be insulting and degrading. i had a tech who worked with a very good drumline as their snare tech (top three last year) and he would come back from their weekend camps, used to hearing like near perfection, and hear us, a decent high school line. he would then act like it was the end of the world and pepper the drummers with insults, telling us that we were a waste of time, we absolutely suck, and actually the most infuriating, he would call everyone the bad word that this forum will censor for the female genitalia. those rehearsals always went by way too slow, and everybody got out of the gym as fast as possible after rehearsal so we could get away from it. worst of all, we got nothing done.

so if you plan on being a good drum tech, be able to be chill when its appropriate to be relaxed, but contrarily be serious at the appropriate times. also, understand and embrace the concept positive reinforcement. as you can probably relate, drummers like to know they are doing certain things right, and they are being recognized for their work. so be positive, someone your drummers can be friends with, and be a good teacher. you will be set!

oh and a drum key, pair of sticks (so you dont have to take MY extra pair), your kids should carry show music with them all the time, so thats not really necessary. i think thats it. drum key, sticks, and a positive attitude and teaching style, and you will get the most out of your drumline

You really don't need to bring much at all. If your students aren't responsible enough to bring their own sticks, stick tape, etc.. then let them learn their lesson. All I bring are clicky sticks, key, and an extra met.

I don't tech (still on the line), but I would have:

clicking sticks
met
earplugs
two t-keys
proper sized wrenches for lugs (if they pop)
screwdriver
pencil
any tool for harness if they break

i'll know the music, so don't need that. kids have extra sticks in the bag, and they can run to the band room if a head breaks. i can drink their water.
I play and teach music (sometimes even band music!)

I work in music tech and licensing.

Music is an art and positive energy.
