I always have anything I could ever need.

- At least 2 pairs of sticks
- At least 2 drum pads
- Stick Tape
- Dr. Beat
- Binder with ALL of the music (In sheet protectors) you could ever even think about playing
in terms of the drumline's playing ability
- Duct tape/regular clear tape
- D rings to put flip folders on
- Sun Screen
- HEADACHE meds (depending on your line you might need more than 1 bottle)
- A little snack to quickly eat during breaks
- PENCILS
- Water Bottle
- Possibly laptop with personal choice of music notation software

I don't know about you guys, but instructing a highschool line that typically does a lot of parades and football games, carrying around a huge bookbag full of crap you probably won't need for half a mile is just cumbersome. I carry a tourque wrench in my pocket and I always have a drumkey on my keychain. In most cases we march one snare less than the total amount of drums we have (we'll march 4 kids but keep the fifth drum on the truck). I don't carry around sticks, theirs four kids in front of me and each has a pair (in a bag yet) that will work just fine. Keep an extra harness on hand just in case. In the last 5 years of instructing I haven't needed much more than that.

Tourque wrench
drumkey
possibly some Allen wrenches
kids that remember their own stuff.

I usually assign different "duties" to the members of the ensemble early on. That way, there is always a snare drummer with a T-key, another with the appropriate hex-wrenches for carriers, one with tape, etc. It makes the kids take more ownership over their drumline.

That said, the things I'd NEVER expect my kids to purchase/bring to rehearsal:

My personal sticks.

Other than that, there isn't anything on my list that the kids shouldn't already own or have access to. I realize that there is a certain level of gratification in having the "setup" that is associated with your stereotypical snare tech, but I try to stay close to home with the reason I'm there, and that is to teach. To do that effectively I only need sticks to demonstrate playing, and my feet to demonstrate marching.

I think every drum tech needs to bring their freakin head. I have three different drum techs and they all say "do this, do that" instead of actually TEACHING us. please explain to your students what they should be doing and HOW.

Totally agree.

When I tech a line, I have:

my Castro hat
my mirrored sunglasses (so kids can't see when I'm eyeballin them)
kakhi cargo shorts/white wife-beater
sandals or new balance
crapper sticks to keep tempo
met on phone (if needed)
a positive attitude
a sense of humor
an ability to motivate

in my bag (usually on the track/sideline):
sunblock, phone, meds, beef jerky, extra pair of sticks, t-keys, tape, bandaids, neosporin, cough drops (helps after yelling a lot), and a copy of the drum book (to show the head director the polyrhythms and how they can work if the band would follow the basses in those meausers... )

If something brakes, I usually have a section leader take the broken item to the percussion trailer and fix it.

I catch a lot where I teach for being mean to my drummers, but my kids know I'm only telling them the truth when I say "guys, that sucked." Or if I call a section or player out for crapping the bed on a lick, or when I yell after the third time the basses forget the visuals... The truth is that your students should be properly educated to know what sucks, and what dosen't suck. When you yell out of anger, you don't solve a lot. But when you yell to motivate, you can accomplish something. The ability to show a student that they are not doing what they should be doing, and motivate that person to modify their opinion of what the technique is and should be, is what we're here for. I try to make them look and act like stormtroopers when they have their drums on, and tell fart jokes on breaks, but when we run a book segment or cadence, or run a show segment on the field, I love seeing random drummers doing pushups on their own because they know they did something wrong and want to fix it! Took me a while to get them to work like that, but when they are not only working for themselves, but for the entire team, you get decent results.

just my thoughts...
