student tampering with drums

Posted: Wed Mar 25, 2009 3:25 pm

Okay, I'm volunteering at my high school until I go off to college. My drumline has been aiming for the corps style, as I am, for the last few years. We have this kid who wants to be show styled so whenever I finish tuning the drums, he'll go tune them back to sound "hott" (like the movie's drums). I"ve let them use the sticks they want that personally I don't like the sound of (Ralph Hardimans) and personally I like the tuning of Crown and Cadets, but as a compromise I offered to go for a wetter sound kinda like SCV, but that wasn't enough for the dude, he wanted them show styled. What would the rest of you instructor dudes do about this?

The kid sounds to me that he has no respect for you for whatever reason. Just tell him that you are the instructor, you are going to tune the drums the way you want, and if he doesn't like it he doesn't have to play.

I've tried that, but it's the BD. He shows no authority over anything, he won't allow me to punish the kids for misbehaving.

haha I wish. BTW I'm going for the PR 07 sounds, but we're using Evans MX Whites on top and Remo White Maxes on the bottom of Pearls. Is this possible? And if we must get new heads, we need something from the Evans list.

Ah, excellent choice. Nice and wet. I'm not an expert on tuning but I am sure that you could get in the general ballpark with those heads. My best advice is just to experiment until you get the sound that you want (duh).

Thanks, also as I said before we're using Hardimans, but I think that will actually help the wet sound. I'm just scared the Maxes will be to thick for me get all that response. I think that the dude will like the PR sound.

If that is so then you could always purchase some differentheads if you have enough money in the budget. Also, in 07 PR had black maxes on top and they might have had a black or white max on bottom so it could be possible to get the sound you want with the heads you already have.

PR probably uses Falam II's or some mylar bottom head. . .I was thinking Hybrids possibly?

Are Hybrids Evans or Remo? Because PR uses Remo.

Yeah, PR uses Remo, but we're with Evans.

Oh, misunderstanding on my part, sorry. Yeah, I'm sure that if you got a thinner mylar head for the bottom then you could definitely get the same sound. It's good that you have Pearl too; that will make it easier to get the PR 07 sound.

I really am not sure what to suggest. If the band director isn't backing you up, then I think there may be more wrong with the program overall than just an insubordinate kid.

Anyway, tuning is always the instructor's call.

Have you taken this issue up with the Band Director more than once?

And, the Evans Hybrids are the best bottom heads on the market...

I quit from the job about a week ago. That place is a complete waste of time. I feel bad for the two kids there who actually want to be good at drums, but I promised them free lessons instead.

That stinks. Unfortunately the lack of care always conquers :(
