Notation questions. What do I need?

Posted: Sun Feb 21, 2016 1:31 pm

Greetings all.

Recently, the opportunity to start teaching music again fell into my lap. It's all volunteer work, but after 20 years out of the game, I must say the world has really changed for the better in terms of technology as an aid. Frankly, I'm overwhelmed and need some help.

I've spent the last month or so playing with MuseScore, have Michael's sound fonts and instruments installed, which has been great so far. I've used it to start rebuilding the lines library, but flat hit a brick wall when it came to flams and rolls. I know the work arounds exist, but frankly using trill for notation and an invisible instrument with 32nd notes for the sounds it just too cumbersome. I want write with something that supports what I need to write.

So on to Finale and Sibelius. I'm not a 'real' educator. Meaning I don't think I qualify for the education discount. So I'd like to keep the out of pocket expense here to a minimum. But at the same time, I am having more fun teaching and writing again then I ever though possible. I'll spend what is appropriate.

What is the minimum I need in either of these products to do the following:

Primarily Battery notation, but easily able to handle pas 40 rudiments without too much work around
Playback with either decent built in sound(font?)s or easily able to import sounds / build custom soundfonts. I actually have a library of samples in .wav format I used to use in SF ACID years ago I'd love to use again
Score and Part exportable to PDF
Export Audio

Can the above be accomplished with lesser versions of Finale (PrintMusic), or another product?
What is the real difference between Finale and Sibelius, I kind of get the impression it's the iPhone vs Android argument. And if I'm write, which one is the iPhone

Thanks
./rat

Would you be willing to share your sample library? I could make you a soundfont with them, ready for musescore or finale/Sibelius if you wish to go that route. That one drumline soundfont for musescore floating around is not that great. I think it's the one you're talking about.

The grand approach is to have virtual drumline by tapspace paired with finale/Sibelius. Although, that is quite expensive.
