double beat

Posted: Tue Jan 13, 2009 10:00 pm

how would you explain someone how to explain someone how to stroke double beat?

like i always figured that each not speaks the same while you are playing two legato notes. but for some reason, people i tell it to has a hard time understanding what this means. advice?

Answer:

It's like playing Eights, but faster, and with rests.

That's the simplest way to explain the correct approach.

Agreed. Teach them it's rhythms and not one note that bounces. Also, as they progress in tempo, you need to explain how the fulcrum moves from wrist to fingers and then arm pumps for fast double stroke rolls.

This really depends on your school of thought.

Double Beat

Posted: Fri May 01, 2009 10:38 am

Easiest way I've noticed to explain double beat my friend, is the Term "Open-Close."

Its not my idea, Scott Johnson really defined it for me at the OnQ camp last year, because i told him i was going into music Ed. and double beat is "the most important exercise in the World," according to Scojo.

The rhythm for a standard double beat is the following:

1 E - A 2 - + A - E + - 4 +

The down Beats are super important in this excercise. Once your ensemble is more fluent with the "open-Close" technique, try having them click the down beats on the rim with there tacit hand.

Down beats fall on The First full attack, the Close of beat 2 the space of beat 3 and the closed and full 8th note of beat 4.

"Open-Close"

With The First approach, obviously you need all the fingers on the stick to pull the stick up and maximize velocity.

Note Technically it would be considered "close-open-close" with the first approach in mind.

After the first attack has been hit on beat (1), you now utilize the velocity of the stick and the rebound removing all activity with your fingers and using natural motion for beat E (of one).

Once beat E (of one) rebounds and strikes the head, you apply the close technique, which is a legato down stroke, or marcato.

Reapply the open technique between beats A (of one) and 2.. + (of two) and A (of two) and so forth. Wish i could show you in person.

The last 2 beats. 4 and + are both full finger marcato strokes.

This form of double beat is the basis to the majority of Scojo's and the Concord Blue devils approach to all diddles, so it should help you out.

Hope it helps man. New to the forums, new to teaching. Not out of high school yet. Got some questions hit me up.

Dan

One forearm motion + two wrist motions = solid.
There's no way around reality, and there's no way to fix things that have already happened. It is what it is, we are what we are, and there is nothing more to life than that. Rule #9.

Dude, so true. You'd probably get a heavy right hand from playing that over and over again.

But yeah, it's all good, Dan. Are you going to the camp again? I'm taking a couple of guys from my line. My goal is to play Jedi Knight with Pete, haha.

(This should be a PM, sorry...)
