What are some other ways to write and give notes to students?

Get proficient at writing. It's honestly faster AND you can pretty much use it on the spot no matter where you are. I suck at writing stuff out because it's not something I do frequently, but it's a skill I wish I had. You don't need expensive programs to write music.

You can use MuseScore. It's free and you can find a drumline sound library to use with it.

How is the percussion notation? Flams and diddles all there?

Flams and diddles are there but don't sound. If is a big issue then Musecore will not be your friend.

Learn to write it out on paper. For anyone that doesn't have years and years of experience with a program, by hand is so much faster.

If you're just in need of a few things now though, Finale (and I'm pretty sure Sibelius does too) has a 30 day trial. You can use all the features of the full program for 30 days for free.

I just realized I was redundant when I said $300 bucks.

I'll never be able to look at you the same.
