How can I interest/inform people in my HS about our D-line?

Posted: Sat Feb 11, 2012 10:30 pm

So I'm in a High School were we do not have a very big Drum line and also not a big Band in general. The "1A" groups.
and I want to try to get kids from my High School to try to have interest. I know music Drum line isn't for everybody and I'm gonna have a lot of people say they are not really interested in doing Drum line and that is okay. But what should I do for people that just have no idea we have one and might be interested? I'm getting our group to work on a few "trashcan" songs in class and fun cadences to kind of peak peoples interest in doing it.

I'm debating on making a flyer that I would possibly put around the school and then hold some kind of clinic and offer free lessons to anyone who is willing to learn.
Any other thought would be great. :)

If there are any regional WGI shows around, get some people to come watch some drumlines. I mean, who doesn't get hyped after watching a professional line perform?

Get out and perform for the community - Prepare a couple beats with good visuals and bring them to a basketball game to perform at timeouts.

Get them while they're young - Recruit at the middle school.

Give the line's image some swag - Do cool visuals and make sure they are clean. Be disciplined so that everything looks uniform. Rehearse the heck out of marching technique so that everybody looks confident with it. Warm up in the lot close enough to the football stadium that fans walk by and see/hear you (again, show off the discipline and uniformity, even when warming up).

If you have a buddy that's good with media stuff, have them get some footage of your drumline and then make it a nice snappy video. It'll show people who might be interested what it's all about and could get others interested as well. It's worked for my groups in the past.

Basketball performance is good. Middle / Junior High performance is even better (though long-term in benefit, not immediate).

If you've got a trashcan or barstool routine, see if you can do that during a cafeteria lunch, perhaps?

that's a lot of baking...might want to delegate

...but seriously, the best thing to do is to promote to the younger members, like the middle schoolers, AND also make sure that it is a fun enviornment to be in so that the current members do enough talking that they recruit themselves. A quality product is the best recruiting tool. A place where people know that the time they invest is going to be worth it.

Word will get out about which activity is fun, and which one is a waste of time. If the current group goes out and plays well, looks good...even intimidating, or at least like they are in control, and are a cohesive team, other people will feed off of that vibe.
