Relaxing the Bassline?

Posted: Wed Aug 16, 2017 9:43 am

Hey guys! How's everyone's marching season going? I'm having a slight problem with my high school's bassline. With the exception of one extremely quick learning vet they all tense up to a point that the drums are virtually silent when heard from the stands. Not only that, but it of course strains their rhythmic abilities as well. There are 4 basses, 3 vets and 1 rookie. Theyre all sophomores and the rookie is a freshman. Any tips on how to keep these new players relaxed?

Is the tensing up a product of nerves, or just pick of strength? If it's nerves, more practice and performances should help. If it's strength, just have them work more endurance and chop exercises, preferably on their drums
