What Happened to Snarescience?

Posted: Fri Jan 08, 2016 12:18 pm

It seemed like this site was really busy for a while and it doesn't seem like half the people are on anymore or at least active. What happened?

I've wondered about this as well, and it might be attributable to how the Internet has changed over the past several years; with Facebook getting more integrated with our devices, the conversations that would be happening here or on Drumlines.org are happening on different Facebook pages (like X*mox's, for example).

I don't think it's the same kind or quality of discussion, since it's much easier to get that delicious sense of Internet connectedness by talking rubbish with Facebook friends, whereas before, you had to enter the world of BB forums where older people had expectations of etiquette and on-topicness. So the "conversation" is now very decentralised.

The drumline reddit is about as busy as this place. And Facebook pages are not as conducive as the BB format to having knowledge reach people who need it. It's a shame, really.

That's a bummer. Is that part of why there is less music being published and transcribed through here?

I also think that a lot of the people that made this site popular have moved on with their lives.

I haven't seen Ryan on here in ages even.

I also think that a lot of the people that were doing the transcribing moved on simply because of the mass amount of people whose first post is "can someone transcribe all the stuff?"

It stinks. I wish I could have been part of the golden years of Snarescience. While I can confirm the Drumline subreddit isn't too active, the drumcorps subreddit is pretty active, as is Drum Corps Planet. Unfortunately you're not gonna have the same volume of snare material on those sites, but there's still some good info, especially since nearly all members are long-time corps vets. As in, nearly all of them,
Hey you, reading this; if you currently don't have a Snarescience account, please feel free to make one and join the conversation. It's free and only takes a minute!

Oh well I can't take all the credit, Bill.

I'll speak for myself here. Even though I stayed in marching band through college, my interest in drum corps and talking about it on the internet decreased dramatically. Going from a high school band that took itself very seriously, college band was a shock. Before I arrived and after I first joined, I resented it quite a bit. Now I love what I did in college even more than high school. College changed my lifestyle completely, and the fun I had on here was quickly replaced with the fun I had interacting with classmates and roommates IRL. I haven't played tenors in probably 9 months now (my guess is March Madness of last year), but honest to god I think about it every day. I don't necessary wish I was still doing it, but riffs and cadences seem to just make their way into my mind and hands absent-mindedly, and I find myself free styling to music I'm listening to once in a while. None of this, unfortunately, makes for good snarescience material.

Nowadays, the monotony of full-time work has settled in. I've thought about teching at a local HS as a volunteer, but none nearby seem to have a serious marching band program. Unfortunately I don't have much to contribute around here anymore, besides occasionally stopping by and seeing something semi-nostalgic like this.

I love him

Drum corps kids from here have mostly aged out and stopped doing band I guess. I'm 18 and young but it's getting kinda lonely.

I visit most every day this site and rudimentaldrumming.com and have noticed that both sites are suffering from a decrease in people posting. You might try checking out DCI Snares, RudimentalDrumming.com and International Rudimental Drum Club on Facebook for some further choices with discussions on drumming.

Snarescience will still continue to be the best source for transcriptions

There used to be dozens of new threads every day here. Hundreds and hundreds of comments a day. Impossible for any one person to read in its entirely (hence the extensive mod team).

Also, memes. Lots of memes.
