Cold Hands

Posted: Wed Nov 04, 2015 6:30 pm

Hi all,

I've been marching snare at my high school for a few seasons now, and the cold has always bothered my hands, but now I'm getting tired of it. Even after warming up or spending lots of time playing, the joints in my fingers freeze up, making it very difficult to drum well. I have tried wearing warmer clothing with no success in keeping my hands warm.

Does anyone have any ideas or tips for keeping my hands warm for an entire practice (~3 hours)? Is something wrong with my hands?

Yeah, there's really no escaping this. Coming from a person who's now done two seasons of collegiate band, hand warmers is your best bet. Other than that, there's not much else you can do.

I've gotten away with wearing thin gloves while playing... not the most elegant thing, and unless they have some good grip it can be tricky, but playing in the cold is never all that easy anyway. My joints freeze up like yours and I can't hold a fulcrum. Hand warmers in gloves are nice.

The cold sucks for playing :(

Being a cymbal player now, the only thing I've found to be worse is when it rains. The leather straps dig into my hands like crazy :(
