Neighbors Don't Want to Hear Me

Posted: Wed Feb 03, 2016 3:34 pm

Hey y'all,

So, as a freshman in college, I have to live in a dorm (ew), which sucks for all of the obvious reasons, but the worst of which is the fact that the kids below me pound on their ceiling (my floor) whenever I try to practice until I stop.

It's only when I have my pad on a stand though, because the sound leaks through the floor. If I'm sitting with the pad in my lap or something they don't hear it/don't care, but standing while playing helps me get better faster, mimics the instrument more, allows me to monitor my technique more effectively, etc. etc. I've tried putting the stand on top of pillows and blankets to try to muffle the noise but to no avail. I'd love to go outside, but it's currently winter in Pennsylvania, and therefore a bit too chilly.

Any ideas on how to make this situation a little better for everyone involved?

Thanks!

Have you tried talking to them about it? A good strategy to go by is ask them about their schedule to see if you can fit your practicing in while they're both not in their dorm. Alternatively, you might look into booking a practice room at your school and actually playing on an instrument.

Actually...as brilliant of an idea as that actually is, working out a schedule with them isn't something I even thought of. That sounds both easy and feasible.

Now to figure out exactly what room number is below me, as my building's room numbering system makes zero sense :P

Thanks, Ferreus!! :)

This...

When I was in college, I was in the rock band with a couple of other guys but clearly we couldn't just set up in a room and blast. But there were a couple of rarely-used rec rooms in the basement. All we had to do was go to the front desk and ask for the key. We never had a problem.

I went to Michigan State, and have been in many of the dorms... new and old. EVERY dorm I have seen has unused or rarely used space. You just have to find it. No sweat at all. Just ask the folks at the desk or maybe a maintenance person. Provided you are not a jerk or suffer from RBF, then they will be happy to help you out.
Without a metronome its not drumming, its just hacking.

Now that you mention it, last semester there was an empty supplemental housing room right down the hall from me...it's since been converted into a lounge, but jee that would have been great if I would have thought of it...lol.
