Music Theory Dilemma

Posted: Fri Apr 25, 2014 2:26 pm

So, I have a free period (I am already in a Percussion class with my fellow percussionists), and I have to choose between an AP Music theory class, and a free period to spend in a practice room with my favorite marimba/snare drum. I am at a loss which to go for, seeing as I love music but don't intend on pursuing it as a career. Which should I choose!?

I'm that guy who says he'll try out for drum corps next year and never does.
But I'm totally gonna try to march Alliance this summer.

40 minutes of free time vs. 40 minutes of free(?) education. In the long run, you'll definitely have wanted the latter. You also said that you loved music, so taking a music theory class is a great way to improve your skill.

55 minutes of free education lol. Oh, and if it affects anything, I would have to take the AP Music Theory online, as it isn't offered at my school as a regular class.

Students at my school have the option of one or even two free periods. I question whether or not you would actually
spend the free period practicing everyday. It would be very tempting to simply goof off or play on your laptop.
If you are disciplined enough to actually practice during your free period I would go for it, although AP Music Theory
would be to your advantage if you plan to major in music. I regret not taking theory in high school because I had to
play catch up as a freshman in college.
