Music Majors

Posted: Wed Aug 24, 2011 5:22 pm

Figured it would be cool to have a place for music majors to chat about school, network, share ideas, and talk about the cool things going on at your school. I know there's a few of us on here. We could also answer questions that potential music majors may have.
I play and teach music (sometimes even band music!)

I work in music tech and licensing.

I'm a percussion major at Northern Illinois.

North Texas is a great place-the music school is huge though, and just know going in that you'll be studying mostly with grad students until your last year or two. Indiana is awesome, my friend is finishing up his masters in percussion there.

I suggest to all of you Missouri State University. It's a great school with a beautiful campus. They have an amazing music program with a 377 member marching band. Mr. Hoover has been here since 1985 (I'm pretty sure) and has a fantastic reputation. I highly suggest you check it out and take a tour of the campus.

I'll be a junior at Ohio University (not ohio state university (OSU)) as a music education major on trumpet. I'm also on the snareline for the Marching 110 (we're pretty entertaining (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/6811 ... nd/page/24" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

I really enjoy having the double perspective of being both wind AND percussion backgrounds. Both worlds are very different but also similar in more ways than one.

One thing I'm curious about from you guys is the use of technology in the classroom. It's a great thing in many classrooms but how can we use it in band and choir rooms?

i know we use powerpoints, and all of the articles we need to read are posted online on a program called blackboard. professors also put up listening examples and downloads of some of the songs we're playing.

i'm in 5 ensembles this semester-wind ensemble, jazz band, steel pan band, percussion ensemble (technically, three percussion ensembles), and a jazz combo

I did that when I was at SFSU, until I realized the program for a minor didn't fit me at all. It was kind of BS, and wouldn't have helped me grow.

Now I'm at community college taking classes so I can hopefully double where I transfer to :T

At our school, we have a really contemporary percussion teacher and a couple things we're doing are computer assisted. For example, in New Music Ensemble, we have a squeaky toy piece that will be run through a computer and it will modify the sounds and play them. (I've yet to see what this will actually turn out to be.)

She also told me about a commissioned composer piece with percussion and trombones that involves a computer... it's a duet with the computer. What we play influences it, and what it plays should influence what we play.

Some interesting things to look forward to.

yeah, and so are Cliff Alexis and Barry Monet. Getting my ass whooped on the tenor pan right now. They're all insane. Liam is probably the best pan player on the planet
