Pressure in the left hand

I've been trying to understand the technique for rolls but I feel like I've hit a major road block. No matter what I do I get tension in my wrist when I try to add pressure from my fulcrum. My tech talks about using the index finger to apply pressure instead of only using the thumb but I cant find any way with my thumb, index finger, or any combination of the two that will give me good sound quality and accurate rhythms without tensing up my wrist. Can someone try to offer an explanation of how to add pressure with left hand traditional that is more detailed than simply "squeeze from the fulcrum?"

In my experience, especially when talking about rolls, you really shouldn't need much active pressure in your fulcrum. Simply setting your grip and not allowing your fingers to fly off should provide all the pressure you need, and you won't need to do much with your fingers beyond that because most of the roll motion will come from your forearms. I know this isn't super detailed, if you want to get in touch I can provide a more detailed explanation in a video or something.
