does playing matched help in trad?

Posted: Mon Jul 03, 2017 9:32 pm

I played matched for about 6 months then switched to trad. I can play the basics in matched but I don't nearly have the finger control I have in my right hand. If I work my left matched hand to the point where it's about as good as my right hand, would that help my tradition technique or finger control or something? Thanks

I think it will, because, while playing in matched grip, you will be working on building the muscles in the hand.

Regardless of how the stick is held, it is the development of control in the individual muscles that allows us to do what we do.

As long as you are playing with focus and concentration, you will be helping your technique.
Here we are, talking band!

They are two different grips. Trad is mostly having to do with wrist rotation not so much turning like your right hand. Chop out a lot with wrist rotation with your left hand. but just because you are learning trad don't give up on matched knowing both and being comfortable with both will really help.

The only thing it will really help is your chops and finger strength. Trad technique can only be built through playing trad
