Left Hand Muffling on Bass Drum

Posted: Thu May 19, 2016 11:08 am

I'm new to instructing and I never marched bass so I do not know the proper way to muffle the drum using the left hand. Can anyone tell me or show me the proper way so I can teach my students?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

There are a lot of different methods, but the easiest is probably to make a spider man sign (extend your forefinger, pinky and thumb) and curl the mallet up in the middle two fingers. Put the left hand against the center of the head (center is extremely important), and apply pressure from the extended fingers, and the fleshy part of the palm at the base of the thumb. If you do it correctly, you should hear a slight change in pitch from muffled to non-muffled notes.
