Switching to traditional

Posted: Tue Oct 27, 2015 11:18 am

Hi, I just started playing with traditional grip and i cant seem to be able to get a good double stroke roll. I can get the singles but once you start having to bounce the left stick i have trouble. I can bounce the left stick but it feels really stiff, even when i try to loosen up. Any help?.
Also im having trouble getting good accents out of the left hand

Play Sanford Double Beat. You can find it in the "exercises" here on snarescience.

For double-triple beat, as slow as it needs to be to play it cleanly. Ditto for rolls. For the rolls, you should practice them in open-closed-open format.

Also, you have two posts on traditional grip, but there is actually very little information. Can you post a video so the rest us can see what is going on with your technique?
Without a metronome its not drumming, its just hacking.

Technique. It takes a long ass time to really fully solidify the grip. I feel comfortable with my own but I'm still trying to improve my grip every day

Look over the Internet and ask some experienced people about what you can fix

The biggest tip I can give is to keep the weight of your thumb on top of the stick

Ditto to everyone else, also make sure you're applying pressure from the right place. Cpowers nailed it by saying keep your thumb on top of the stick, it's from the thumb that you can really apply that pressure and stroke in the doubles and diddles. It will definitely take some experimenting at a wide array of tempos to master that feeling, but once you do make sure you never forget it.

Why thank you!

It's also really important NOT to neglect the right hand! I see it all the time that people are obsessing over the left hand but their right hand needs help too!
