While I barely understand the nuts and bolts of science, I am deeply awed when I read about the theories or discoveries of these guys:

Physical Sciences
Gallileo; Copernicus; Keppler; Hubble; Darwin; many geologists, Stephen J Gould

Philosophers
Noam Chomsky, John Dewey, John Locke, Ayn Rand

Sociologists
Karl Marx, Jared Diamond, Thomas Hobbes, Alexis de Tocqueville

That's pretty debatable, given that she essentially developed Objectivism singlehandedly - even writing non-fiction works on subject.

I enjoy a good Kierkegaard reading. Nietzsche is interesting as well. Sartre is a bit dry but I like existentialism, so I enjoy reading him too. Things written by His Holiness, The Dalai Lama tends to be, if nothing else, enlightening as well. Not anything (or anyone) in specific that I'm talking about, but I enjoy reading his (their) works.

I wouldn't necessarily call him a strict "philosopher", but Alan Lightman has become one of my favorite authors in recent years. Einstein's Dreams is easily one of my favorite books of all time, and I'm enjoying the metaphysical reflections found in Mr. g so far. I recommend checking him out.

Of course, Sagan and Feynman are essentially to check out if you want to talk about good scientists, especially ones with such great oratory abilities.

Although maybe not so much a philosopher as much as he is a writer, I love Albert Camus and his theories of absurdism.

C.S. Lewis was pretty chill. Einstein was cool. The Dalai Lama is cool.

Anthony Bourdain's not a philosopher, but he's pretty cool too.

I'm a big fan of Joseph Campbell's stuff on the monomyth. Interesting stuff to think about.
