That's awesome, man! It's cool you have such admiration and are inspired by a corps.

To help you with bass routine, the biggest thing bass drummers lack when practicing is....another bass drummer. Splitting rhythms is much easier when you think of the rhythm as a whole and place your part into that rhythm...so the more "puzzle piece" rhythms you have to work with...the easier it is to practice and understand the full rhythm.

My suggestion to replicate this practice is to record yourself playing what you believe is the BASE rhythm or most important rhythm. Then play with that recording because now you are not only practicing with "someone else" but you are learning about the priority some rhythms take over others.

For instance...you wouldn't record yourself playing e's and ah's of an eighths exercise because those rhythms aren't normally the ones you are trying to split. Instead you might record the eighth notes ON the beat first...and then play e's and ah's to split that....listening for balanced sixteenth notes as the full rhythm.
