Help spicing up a measure?

Posted: Sat Aug 08, 2015 7:06 pm

Ok so I'm rewriting bits and pieces of our closer's quad part to make them more challenging and impressive, in addition to being fun to play. There's one measure in particular (which I've attached) that I can't see to get any ideas for. It has to be awesome because it's part of the end of our last drum break. I want to keep it somewhat rudimentally similar to what is written because the snares play the same thing, so no crazy tuplets.

I know this probably a strange request, but could anybody help me in spicing up this measure (scrapes and/or crossovers and/or generally more fun and difficult)? The tempo is 160.

Take the 16th-8th combo on beat one and stick it LLR (as in scrape the 16th notes with the left hand and hit the mid-low tom with the right), then stick the next three combos (16th 16th 8th, 16th 16th 8th, 16th 16th 16th) RRL RRL RRL with a flam at the beginning of each of those segments, so lRRL lRRL lRRL; essentially Swiss Army Triplets but not in a tuplet. Does that make any sense? If I didn't get my point across, let me know and I'll write it out for you. Hope that helps!

it would also help to see the next measure to see whats up next so we can write it better. but my advice is: scrapes are your friends. use them. lol.
